Job Posting: Founding Engineer – EdTech Startup

Job Summary: As a Founding Engineer at Room to Discover, you will play a critical role in developing our public-facing platform and integrating our back-end operational systems. The founding engineer will work closely with the founding team to develop and implement the technical architecture, design and develop scalable systems, and lead the engineering efforts to create an exceptional user experience. This is a project-to-hire role that begins with the rapid development of our MVP using low-code / no-code tools. This is a unique opportunity to have a direct impact on the growth and success of our startup while shaping the future of education.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the founding team to define the technical vision and roadmap for our EdTech platform.
  • Design and develop scalable and reliable software systems, ensuring high performance and responsiveness.
  • Build and lead a team of engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle, from architecture and design to implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices, and apply them to improve our product offerings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and educators, to understand user needs and deliver exceptional user experiences.
  • Help shape the company’s engineering culture and contribute to creating a positive and inclusive work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a software engineer, preferably in a startup environment.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or Java
  • Ability to leverage no-code and low-code tools (such as Bubble.io) to quickly launch and iterate consumer-facing platforms
  • Experience with modern web technologies and frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js).
  • Solid understanding of software development principles, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and building scalable systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Passion for education and a desire to make a positive impact on students’ and teachers’ lives.

Additional Information:

  • This is a part-time (20 hours) position that will grow to full-time in the next 3-6 months
  • Located at our workspace in Charlottesville, VA.
